MASAKI OKUTEN

sogo #7
Okuten was born in Kanagawa Prefecture, Japan in 1985. He graduated from the Department of Painting, College of Art and Design at Musashino Art University in 2012. Okuten’s paintings are like scribble drawings of a young child, with chaotic lines appear in white on canvas. First, linear masking is applied over white backgrounds (sometimes direct transfers of lines drawn by children are used), then overlaid with colors and brushstrokes which eventually turn into an overlapping background. Finally, the masking is peeled off to reveal white lines from the innermost layer of the colors. Okuten engraves lines into the canvas the same way as one draws a painting by tracing sand with one’s fingers. Okuten has received the GEISAI #18 Holbein Award (2013), the 3rd D Art Biennale Excellence Award (2014), and others.
