ATSUSHI KAGA
Born in Tokyo, Japan in 1978, graduated from Coláiste Stiofáin Naofa (Cork, Ireland) in 2001 and National College of Art and Design (Dublin, Ireland) in 2005. After completing his studies, Kaga continued his career and was based in Ireland. Since his first solo exhibition in 2005, he has held numerous solo exhibitions in cities such as Dublin, New York, and Sao Paulo until 2018, but has never exhibited in Japan. Kaga has continuously depicted anthropomorphized animals with unique nicknames such as "Usacchi" and "Panda dad". Their lives filled with joy, anger, sorrow, and pleasure are somehow more human than human. Influenced by various cultures absorbed in Japan where he was born and raised, as well as the Celtic culture and ethnic history he learned in Ireland, his works are uniquely fused. In recent years, while working in Kyoto, Kaga has adopted elements like a gold leaf-style background influenced by the Rinpa school and continued to develop a flexible approach to his artistic expression. In addition to painting, he also collaborated with his late mother on the performance art “Nerd Bag Project,” in which he painted on the bags sewn by her. Kaga has continuously received funding from the Arts Council of Ireland and was awarded the Mont Blanc Young Artist World Patronage Award in 2011. Furthermore, he has participated in numerous residency programs in cities like Miami, São Paulo, and New York.
