Nicolas Buffe was born in Paris, France, in 1978. He graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in 2007, and since then has been based in Tokyo, where he received his Ph.D. from the Department of Intermedia Art, Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts in 2014. Since his childhood, Buffe was deeply immersed in anime, tokusatsu, Japanese manga, and video games, while his academic research has referenced classical traditions from periods including the Middle Ages, Renaissance, and the Baroque. He attempts to visually meld the narratives and visual influences of classical works with subcultures. He held his solo exhibition “The Dream of Polifilo” at the Hara Museum of Contemporary Art in 2014. He was in charge of the entire visual design for the operas “Orlando Paladino” in 2012 and “Il Re Pastore” in 2015 at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris. Buffe also designed the Museum Garage, which opened in 2018 in the Miami Design District, and has been expanding the scope of his work. He was named a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in 2018 (ceremony in 2019).
