TOMOO GOKITA
Born in Tokyo in 1969. Without receiving formal education in fine arts at art universities, Gokita’s continuous submission of illustration works to magazines since high school marked the start of his career in design and illustration. His career became widely known with the publication of his collection “Lingerie Wrestling” in 2000, and he began to present his works as an artist in galleries in Japan and abroad. The portrayal of human skillfully captures the characteristics of the figure while boldly breaking down the form. In particular, his monochrome works with large brushstrokes on canvas are his representative series of works, which have captivated collectors around the world. Many of the works were created out of respect for music and professional wrestling, which he is well acquainted with. In 2007, he was introduced along with artists like Eddie Martinez and Ben Jones in “Mail Order Monsters”, a traveling exhibition that had toured to Deitch Projects (NY), Peres Projects (Berlin), and other venues. Group exhibitions include “The Unseen Relationship: Form and Abstraction” (Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art, 2012) and “Five Stories about Art - It's Always There” (Okazaki Mindscape Museum, 2022). In addition, solo exhibitions include the main gallery of New York, Mary Boone gallery in 2014 (also in 2017), his first museum solo exhibition at the Kawamura Memorial DIC Museum of Art, a large-scale solo exhibition at the Tokyo Opera City Art Gallery in 2018, and “Get Down”, his first solo exhibition in an overseas museum, Dallas Contemporary (Texas) in 2021 was a success.
